Star Tracker
An optical sensor that estimates spacecraft orientation from star patterns.
Why it matters
Accurate attitude knowledge helps instruments and antennas point at their intended targets.
Technology / attitude systems
Overview
A star tracker measures attitude rather than directly giving a complete position in space. Bright objects, stray light and rapid motion can interfere with measurements, so other sensors often complement it.
Educational reference, reviewed . This page is not a live mission-status report.
How it works
A camera records stars in its field of view. Software matches their relative positions to a stored catalogue and calculates the sensor's orientation relative to a celestial reference frame.
Why it matters
Accurate attitude knowledge helps instruments and antennas point at their intended targets.
