Spacecraft Systems and Robotic Exploration

A spacecraft is an interdependent set of systems. A sophisticated instrument is useful only if the vehicle can power, point, protect and communicate its measurements.

The bus supports the payload

The payload performs the mission’s main measurement or service. The bus supplies functions such as structure, electrical power, thermal control, attitude control and communications. Engineers budget mass, energy and data across these systems. Improving one subsystem can increase demands elsewhere, so design is a negotiated set of trade-offs.

Keeping direction and temperature

Star trackers help estimate orientation; reaction wheels and thrusters can change it. Solar panels need illumination, antennas may need Earth pointing, and instruments need target pointing. Insulation and radiators control heat transfer. Vacuum prevents ordinary external convection, but radiation can still remove heat.

Robots work with delay

Deep-space commands and telemetry take time to travel. A rover cannot always wait for Earth to handle every immediate hazard. Autonomy can support navigation and protective responses within designed limits. Communication bottlenecks also encourage onboard processing and careful selection of observations rather than continuous unrestricted video.

Key takeaways

  • The bus enables the payload.
  • Pointing, power and thermal control are coupled.
  • Communication delay makes onboard autonomy valuable.
