Astronomy Equipment
Spectroscope
An instrument that separates light into its component wavelengths.
Why it matters
Spectroscopy links remote light to the physics of stars, gas and planets.
Technology / optical accessories
Overview
A spectrum reveals information beyond the shape or brightness in an image. Features can indicate physical conditions and chemical species, but interpretation needs calibration and a model of how the light formed.
Educational reference, reviewed . This page is not a live mission-status report.
How it works
A prism or diffraction grating spreads wavelengths across a detector or viewing field. The resulting spectrum can be measured for lines, continuum shape and shifts relative to reference wavelengths.
Why it matters
Spectroscopy links remote light to the physics of stars, gas and planets.
