Astronomy Equipment
Telescope Eyepiece
An optical assembly used to view and magnify the image formed by a telescope.
Why it matters
Choosing a suitable magnification helps match the view to the target and observing conditions.
Technology / optical accessories
Overview
An eyepiece does not create the detail that the objective failed to collect. Increasing magnification can also enlarge blur from the atmosphere, poor focus or unstable mounting. Eye relief affects viewing comfort.
Educational reference, reviewed . This page is not a live mission-status report.
How it works
The telescope forms a real image near its focal plane. Eyepiece lenses present that image to the observer's eye. Magnification is telescope focal length divided by eyepiece focal length.
Why it matters
Choosing a suitable magnification helps match the view to the target and observing conditions.
