Spacecraft Radiator
A surface designed to release unwanted heat into space.
Why it matters
Heat rejection keeps equipment within operating temperatures.
Technology / thermal systems
Overview
Spacecraft electronics and crew generate heat even in a cold surrounding environment. In vacuum there is no surrounding air to carry that heat away by convection. Radiators must have a suitable view of space.
Educational reference, reviewed . This page is not a live mission-status report.
How it works
Heat reaches a radiator through conductive paths or circulating fluid. The surface emits infrared radiation, carrying thermal energy away from the spacecraft.
Why it matters
Heat rejection keeps equipment within operating temperatures.
