Multilayer Insulation
Reflective layers that reduce radiative heat transfer on spacecraft.
Why it matters
Managing heat passively reduces demands on heaters and other thermal systems.
Technology / thermal systems
Overview
The familiar shiny blankets on spacecraft serve a thermal function. They are not universal shields against radiation or impacts. Their performance depends on installation, spacing and the surrounding environment.
Educational reference, reviewed . This page is not a live mission-status report.
How it works
Thin reflective surfaces separated by low-conductivity spacers reduce exchange of thermal radiation. Openings, seams and contact points can create paths that affect the thermal balance.
Why it matters
Managing heat passively reduces demands on heaters and other thermal systems.
