Overview

Returned samples can be examined with instruments too large or specialised to fly. Collection, containment, contamination control and entry are separate engineering challenges. Not every sample-collecting mission returns material.

How it works

A spacecraft acquires material and protects it during transport. A return capsule separates for atmospheric entry and recovery, with procedures designed to preserve the scientific value of the sample.

Why it matters

Laboratory analysis can revisit material with improving techniques long after the mission.
