Space Missions & Technology
Solar Sail
A reflective structure that uses momentum from sunlight for propulsion.
Why it matters
Sailing explores propulsion without consuming conventional reaction propellant for the sail's thrust.
Technology / in-space propulsion
Overview
Solar sailing is not pushed by the solar wind in the ordinary photon-sail concept. Large area and low mass are important because the force is small. It is a demonstrated technology, not a claim of routine interstellar travel.
Educational reference, reviewed . This page is not a live mission-status report.
How it works
Photons transfer momentum when reflected by the sail. Changing its orientation changes the direction of the resulting force, allowing gradual changes to the orbit or trajectory.
Why it matters
Sailing explores propulsion without consuming conventional reaction propellant for the sail's thrust.
