Telescopes
Radio Telescope
An instrument that detects radio waves from astronomical sources.
Why it matters
Radio observations trace cold gas, pulsars and energetic activity across the universe.
Technology / optics
Overview
Radio astronomy measures signals that human eyes cannot see. Large collecting structures and sensitive receivers are needed because cosmic radio signals can be extremely weak compared with local interference.
Educational reference, reviewed . This page is not a live mission-status report.
How it works
An antenna concentrates radio energy into a receiver. Electronics amplify and sample the signal. Multiple antennas can combine measurements through interferometry rather than acting as a single filled mirror.
Why it matters
Radio observations trace cold gas, pulsars and energetic activity across the universe.
