Space Telescopes

Observatories above the atmosphere reveal wavelengths and stable views that are difficult or impossible to obtain from the ground.

The atmosphere is a filter

Earth’s atmosphere transmits some wavelengths and absorbs others. Turbulence also blurs many ground-based images. Space telescopes avoid these effects but face launch constraints, difficult maintenance and strict power and thermal budgets. Ground observatories remain essential, especially where large apertures and accessible instruments offer advantages.

Different observatories see different physics

Hubble observes ultraviolet, visible and near-infrared light. Webb is optimized for infrared astronomy, using a large segmented mirror and careful thermal protection. Chandra observes X-rays from energetic environments. Comparing images requires understanding their wavelength bands and processing rather than assuming every color matches human vision.

Translate a question into a measurement

A telescope’s aperture, detectors, wavelength coverage and observing schedule determine which questions it can answer. Spectroscopy can diagnose physical properties; imaging locates structures; repeated observations reveal variability. A mission is not simply “better” because it is newer: complementary instruments often provide the strongest interpretation.

Key takeaways

  • Space avoids atmospheric absorption and turbulence.
  • Different wavebands probe different processes.
  • Observation design starts with a scientific question.
