The First Martian Cities Should Be Built Underground

Main Idea

The first successful Mars settlements may not begin as glass domes on the surface, but as underground habitats built inside lava tubes, caves, or buried structures. Mars has a thin atmosphere, high radiation exposure, extreme temperature swings, and frequent dust storms. Instead of fighting those surface conditions from day one, early settlers could use the planet itself as protection. An underground colony would be shielded by Martian rock and soil, reducing radiation risk while helping stabilize temperature. Surface structures could still exist for solar farms, landing zones, greenhouses, communication towers, and exploration vehicles, but the main living areas may be safer below ground.

Reasoning / Evidence

Mars colonization is usually imagined as futuristic surface domes, but underground construction may be more realistic for early survival. Mars lacks Earth’s strong magnetic field and thick atmosphere, so radiation is one of the biggest long-term risks for humans. Burying habitats under regolith or placing them inside natural lava tubes could provide passive shielding without requiring massive imported materials. Underground spaces could also protect settlers from micrometeorites, dust storms, and daily temperature extremes. This would reduce pressure on life-support systems and make early colonies more stable. A practical first settlement might use inflatable or modular habitats placed inside tunnels, then sealed, pressurized, and connected with airlocks. The theory is that Mars cities will evolve from “hidden survival bases” before becoming visible surface civilizations. The first truly permanent Martian city may look less like a sci-fi dome and more like a network of underground neighborhoods, with the surface used mainly for energy, science, transport, and expansion.
