Mars Settlement Should Begin With Robotic Infrastructure Before Human Colonies

Main Idea
Human settlement on Mars should begin with robotic preparation before large human colonies arrive. Cargo landers, autonomous construction machines, power systems, oxygen generators, water extraction units, communication towers, landing pads, and radiation-shielded shelters should be placed and tested first. Once this basic survival network is working, humans can arrive safely and expand it into a permanent settlement.
Reasoning / Evidence
Mars is too far from Earth for quick rescue, and communication delays make emergency support difficult. A realistic settlement plan should reduce risk before humans land. Robots can first scout safe landing zones, prepare landing pads, test water extraction from ice-rich regions, generate oxygen from the Martian atmosphere, and build shelters covered with Martian regolith for radiation protection. When the first crew arrives, their mission should be to maintain and expand the robotic base instead of building a city from zero. They could live inside pressurized habitats, use stored supplies, grow experimental crops in controlled greenhouses, recycle water, use local oxygen, and rely on solar or nuclear power. Over time, the base could grow into a permanent settlement with science labs, underground living areas, food production zones, repair workshops, medical systems, and fuel production. Mars settlement becomes realistic only when humans can produce essentials locally: water, oxygen, shelter, energy, food, spare parts, and fuel.
