NASA’s Swift Observatory Returns to Full Gamma-Ray Burst Operations

NASA’s Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory has reactivated its third science instrument and resumed automatically tracking powerful gamma-ray bursts across the universe.

The Burst Alert Telescope returned to science operations after being temporarily shut down to conserve power and reduce atmospheric drag. Swift can once again automatically redirect its X-ray and ultraviolet telescopes when it detects sudden high-energy explosions. The observatory is currently operating roughly 325 km above Earth as NASA continues monitoring its declining orbit. NASA Science
